蝶は幼虫（サナギ）から成虫へと大きく姿を変えて新しい姿になることから、「変身」「変化」「再生」「復活」の象徴とされています。
儚い一生を送りながらも、美しい羽を持つことから、「美しさ」と「儚さ」の象徴でもあります。
また、花から花へ自由に飛び回る姿から、「自由」や「解放」の象徴とされることもあります。

蝶は幸運の象徴であり、神や天使の使い、死者の化身といわれたりすることもあります。

ギリシャ語で蝶々のことを「psyche（プシュケ）」というそうです。
これはギリシャ神話に登場する、アモルに愛される美少女の名前が由来です。
この名前の元は「霊魂（プシュケー）」を人格化したもので、魂や不死を意味しているそうです。
先ほどの「アモル」と「プシュケ」の登場するギリシャ神話の『アモルとプシュケ』のあらすじを少し紹介します。
ある国の王と女王の間に三人の娘がありました。
末娘のプシュケの美しさはこの世の者とは思えないほどでした。
その美しさに女神のアフロディーテ（ヴィーナス）は嫉妬し、彼女を醜い男と結婚させようと考えました。
美の女神のアフロディーテ（ヴィーナス）は息子の愛の神のアモル（エロス）を呼び出し、プシュケに下賤でつまらない男に恋をさせるように命じます。
エロスはさっそくプシュケのそばに舞い降りますが、プシュケの美しい寝顔を見ているうちに悪戯をするのが気の毒になってしまいます。
そうしているうちにあやまって、自分の恋の矢で自分を傷つけてしまい、プシュケに恋をしてしまいます。
神託に従って山の上に取り残されていたプシュケは、気づくと宮殿にいてアモルとの新婚生活を始めます。
アモルは自分の姿を見てはいけないとプシュケに伝え、夜の間だけ宮殿でプシュケと一緒に過ごしました。プシュケは夫の姿を一目見たいと思い、アモルが寝ているすきにろうそくで顔をのぞき込みます。
愛の神エロスが夫であることに驚いたプシュケは、アモルの肩に蝋(ろう)を垂らしてしまい、アモルが目覚めてしまいました。
姿を見られたアモルは姿を消し、プシュケはアモルを探すために旅に出ます。
義母アフロディーテから与えられた試練を乗り越え、最後は神酒アンブロジアを飲んで不死身になり、オリンポスでアモルと幸せに暮らしました。
ハッピーエンドのお話でした。

Butterflies are considered symbols of "metamorphosis," "change," "rebirth," and "resurrection" because they undergo a major transformation from larva (pupa) to adulthood and take on a new form.

Although they live a fleeting life, they have beautiful wings, so they are also symbols of "beauty" and "transience."

They are also sometimes considered symbols of "freedom" and "liberation" because they fly freely from flower to flower.

Butterflies are symbols of good luck, and are sometimes said to be messengers of gods and angels, or incarnations of the dead.

In Greek, butterfly is called "psyche."
This comes from the name of a beautiful girl loved by Amor in Greek mythology.
The name is apparently the personification of "soul (psyche)" and means soul and immortality.
Here's a brief summary of the Greek myth "Amor and Psyche," in which Amor and Psyche appear.
A king and queen of a certain country had three daughters.
The youngest daughter, Psyche, was so beautiful that she seemed otherworldly.
The goddess Aphrodite (Venus) became jealous of her beauty and wanted to marry her to an ugly man.
Aphrodite (Venus), the goddess of beauty, summoned her son, Amor (Eros), the god of love, and ordered him to make Psyche fall in love with a lowly, boring man.

Eros immediately flies down beside Psyche, but as he looks at her beautiful sleeping face he feels bad for playing a prank on her.
While doing so, he accidentally hurts himself with his love arrow and falls in love with Psyche.
Psyche, who had been left behind on the mountain as per the oracle, wakes up to find herself in the palace, starting her married life with Amor.
Amor tells Psyche not to look at him, and spends the night with her in the palace. Wanting to catch a glimpse of her husband, Psyche uses a candle to peek into his face while he sleeps.
Shocked to find that Eros, the god of love, is her husband, Psyche drips wax onto Amor's shoulder, waking him up.
Amor disappears when he is seen, and Psyche sets out on a journey to find him.
After overcoming the trials given to her by her stepmother Aphrodite, she finally drank the sacred liquor ambrosia, became immortal, and lived happily ever after with Amor in Olympus.
It was a story with a happy ending.
